I have finally put the Mermaid Venetian wall mask up for sale. I hope she brings a smile to your face. She is, after all, a goddess of the ocean.
She’s a real beauty and I’ll never duplicate her, so this is a true one-off work.
The papier mache is all my own work – no pre-made blank from China for this one. The solid plaster face I used as the basis for this is one I made from my face about thirty years ago – so it’s the young me immortalised! I created the basic shape by molding clay over and around the plaster face, then I made a plaster mold and pressed the papier mache into it – masses of work painstakingly layering paper and glue. Then I sanded and sanded and sanded – I must be crazy – and finished with a layer of glue and plaster. After that ,she sat unfinished in my workshop for years while I concentrated on my writing. Eventually, I got around to painting and decorating her, and now, finally, I’ve added her to my website so you can buy her. She’s finally ready to grace someone else’s wall.
